MINUTES - JULY MEETING
Respectfully Submitted by Jonathan Reasor
The meeting was called to order by President Glendon Downing at 7:00 P.M on July 14, 2008 at the V.F.W. Post 8639. Members said the Pledge of Allegiance .
•• The 2008 KCA Knife Show was the first item discussed. Glendon Downing updated the club on the knife show progress.
Glendon has recruited Will Close to make the gravy for the Vendors' Breakfast on Saturday morning and is getting a price from Hardee's on providing the biscuits. Jonathan Reasor has found someone to run the concessions at the show and is working out the details. Some members brought up the issue of the free table with the purchase of 4 and the listing of a show chair in blade magazine. These issues were discussed and resolved with most members agreeing it was either bad communication within the group or a simple mistake by the magazine in assuming that the contact info was also the show chair. Apologies went out all around for anyone that might be upset. The members are resolved to make this the best knife show of2008 .
•• June Minutes were accepted as printed in the bolster. Treasurers' report was accepted as read by Jonathan Reasor.
•• The October Picnic has been set for October 4,2008 at the Coon Hunters' Club. The members voted not to have an October meeting and to notify the VFW Post as such .
•• The Christmas Party was discussed and members were asked to notify Dale Greenwell if they know of any restaurants with a party room larger the Ryan's that could accommodate the group .
•• The 50/50 raffle made $44.00 the Choice knife raffle raised $50.00 .
•• Joe Jones gave a presentation about the knife that he had made and the materials used in its construction. The knife was on display for all the members to look at.
•• Bruce Reasor was made a lifetime member for his outstanding contributions to the club over the past 13 years. He has served as President and is our current treasurer. He has made many donations to the club and has always been an enthusiastic collector and club member.
•• Mac Howard conducted a lively auction with several items being sold. There will be another auction after the August meeting.
Glendon adjourned the meeting.
BANTAM-SIZED BIRD & TROUT KNIVES
By Barry Carithers
It was the vintage cast-iron string dispenser stuck in the garage corner of the estate sale that really caught my immediate attention. I remember the local butcher at our farmers market a half century ago having one of these quaint devices adjoining the brown butcher paper roll. But here, tucked into the remnants of the dispenser's sadly soiled string roll was the hilt of a small fixed blade knife. I carefully pulled out the tiny stag pommel, yellow cracked-ice handled piece revealing the deeply tarnished tang stamp of KA-BAR on the blade.
Bird & trout fixed blades have been a staple side piece of fishermen and small bird hunters over the last 75 years, and have recently gained a sizeable audience among knife collectors as well as those who collect hunting and fishing memorabilia. Made by the major cutlery companies of the U.S. and Sheffield, they generally will be found in stacked leather handles, as well as the preferred collectors pieces in bone stag and colored composition.
The rarer, very small or bantam-sized bird & trout's are generally found with an overall length of 6 3/8 inches or less. The most commonly occurring pieces found on the internet auction sites are the smaller variation of the 28 pattern by Western Cutlery of Boulder, Colorado. Introduced in mid-1930s, it remained a popular knife among its dedicated users in the western U.S. until the company's closing in 1991. Camillus purchased the rights to this and many other cutlery pieces at the 1991 company assets auction and continued producing this model with both the Western & Camillus tang stamp until 2005 or 2006.
Other smaller bird and trout collectable pieces are to be found with tang-stamps of Case, Queen, Ka-Bar, William Rogers, and numerous other cutlery companies. A delight to collect with their various handle materials and pommel shapes, these petite pieces have gone from "sleepers" to hot collectables on today's market. Normally "bigger is better" applies to many vintage cutlery pieces, but the "bantam birds" are now nesting among sporting and blade collections alike. Good hunting!

Here
it is, the 2008 D' Holder Custom Pearl Club Knife.
Jerry Bodner brought this prototype to the knife meeting. It's beautifully crafted with a custom sheath. There is only going to be forty of these made. D' has only made club khives once before and that was for his home club. The KCA Club knife will be the only other club knife ever produced or that will be produced by D'.
We only have a few more available and they are being sold on a first come first serve basis. It's a $125.00 to reserve a knife or $250.00 to pay in full. A special thanks goes out to D' Holder and Jerry Bodner for making this special opportunity available to the KCA Members.

THE KCA NEEDS YOUR HELP!!!
The
2008 KCA Knife Show is fast approaching and we need everybody to pitch in and
help.
We need members to pass out flyers and spread the word about our show so we can fill up the National Guard Armory. We are going to need members to help with the actual running of the show and to help with Kentucky Cutlery Association Booth, call Glendon Downing at (502) 459-5358 to volunteer. The show is the greatest source of revenue our club has and it success will help the club continue to provide a place for local knife enthusiasts to come and share stories, trade and learn about the world of knives. You can make this show great, please volunteer.
