Published in The Courier-Journal on 5/12/2008 .
The knife community has lost a great man and knife enthusiast with the passing of Colonel C. J. Hyde. What the
Courier-Journal left out was that Colonel Hyde was a founding member of the Kentucky Cutlery Association and had served as president. He was the elected President of the N.K.C.A in 1985 and in 1988 and served the NKCA well. He was a man who lived life to the fullest and served the community in which he lived. Our deepest sympathies and prayers goes out to his family.
THOSE PECULIAR BUT PRIZED “PIGGYBACKS”! BY BARRY CARITHERS
Commonly known as twin or blade combo sets, the “piggyback” was simply two identical or different patterned fixed handled knives placed in a single leather sheath. Sold as a “practical combination for camping, hiking or fishing,” the majority are generally, but not always, knife sets that fall into the bird & trout category. Most are patterns or models that were originally sold by the manufacturer in a single leather sheath, but were eventually mated with a 2nd knife in a uniquely designed double-pouch sheath.
The history of the commercial “piggy-back” knife set goes back over a century when a simple butcher-style hunting knife might be mated in a double sheath with another more sporting pattern. Marbles went one step farther with their Coquina Outfit, a 3 pocket sheath with a Ideal model, skinning model, and stag-handled sharpening steel. Most major U.S. cutlery manufacturers who produced fixed blades made such piggyback sets at some time during their corporate history. Such outfits today are difficult to find due to sheath leather wear or disrepair, but commonly many were eventually separated into two single sheathed pieces and the original double sheath discarded.
One
of the common sets found today were made by Western Cutlery of Boulder,
Colorado. Created and sold throughout the 1950s and 1960s, these piggybacks
contain a 28 & 48 pattern, or two 48 pattern bird & trout knives. The sets are
handled in stacked leather, colored composition, or jigged bone. The leather
sheaths for these sets are usually found with the “acorn and oak leaf”
embossing. I recently had the opportunity to view a special Western piggyback
set made up shortly after Alaska’s statehood in 1959. As I was told by its
owner, mementos of this important occasion were being created to fulfill the
needs of the tourist & resident alike. Western Cutlery created special ALASKA
stamped leather sheaths in both single pouch as well as double piggyback pouch
patterns. White tenite handled knives were inserted in their respective sheaths
and sent to an Alaskan distributor where they were scrimshawed by Inuit natives
before being offered for sale. Most found today carry scrimshawed handle designs
of dog sled teams, kayaking natives, igloo with dogs and sleds, etc. Pieces are
signed with the native engraver name or are merely etched “Alaska”.
For
the collector that enjoys
cutlery combo outfits, the
piggyback sets offer an
extraordinary addition
to their acquisitions.
Good hunting!
