Message from the Editor! Great Eastern Stag Scout Trapper Knife ▬►
Hello Bolster readers and knife enthusiasts,
The KCA
Christmas Party was a huge success. We had great attendance, plenty of
good food
and friends to share it with. Former President Mac Howard, now vice-president,
wanted me to pass along the members thanks to all the great people who
donated
prizes for the party and thank all the members who donated toys, pop tops and
other necessities to the Ronald McDonald House. A lot of people will benefit
from the generosity of our members. The KCA also presented Ronald McDonald house
with a $100 Donation from the treasury.
We had two Custom Maker Knife Raffle Drawings at the party. The Mike Pellegrin Custom Pearl Hunter was won by Lisa Sebenick of the NKCA. The Paul Myers Custom Fixed Blade, which was donated for the Irene Haberman Memorial Raffle was won by David Mullin, who just so happens to be a NKCA Director. A special thanks to Jerry Bodner for all his hard work on the Irene Haberman Raffle, the raffle raised $725.00 for the KCA treasury.
We have some great things going for the new year. First we have a new club president, Glendon Downing. Glendon is planning on streamlining the meetings so we can get the routine KCA business out of the way faster and get down to trading and swapping stories of finding knife treasure faster. He also has ideas about the next KCA Knife Show and wants other members to take a more active roll in the group. He will be penning his first President’s Message next issue so stay turned.
On the Club knife front we have lots of exciting news to report. The 2007 KCA Club Great Eastern Genuine Stag Scout Trapper Model 73 club knives are here. Jim Sergeant is finishing up the etching as I write and they should be available at our Monday meeting. This was a limited run of 25 so buy early or you will miss out on this historic KCA knife release. The knife will sell for $90.00. The KCA Youth Great Eastern Primitive Bone Scout Trapper knife was also a limited production run of 25 and is selling out fast at $70.00.
Ben Gray will be presenting two knives to the club at the meeting to consider for our 2007 Kentucky Cutlery Association Mother of Pearl Club Knife. They are both 3 Eye German knives with beautiful iridescent pearl. The pattern choices are a large congress or trapper. We are being presented with an opportunity to buy these at a good price as they are recently uncovered old stock. There will be a limited number of 25 of these etched for the club. This is the first year we are producing two different club knives and the first stag ever. The Great Eastern Knives are beautiful and masterfully crafted and the 3 Eye German pearl knives are timeless works of art. I would encourage those who can, to purchase both club knives and a youth knife this year.
We have had some interesting discussion on club knives this year, staying with tradition versus going in a new direction, stag versus pearl, members who attend meetings versus those who support by paying dues and buying knives. In the end we come to the conclusion that all are an important part of the KCA. The two club knives represents the KCA and its members better than just one. When it comes to members we have pearl guys and stag guys, Case guys and Parker guys, fixed blade or folder guys. One of our greatest members, Jerry Bodner, makes knives to small to use, but we all share a love and appreciation for a well crafted knife and the stories and traditions behind those masterpieces.
As we begin this new year think about what you would like to see happen at the KCA this year. We need ideas for speakers and presentations for the meetings. We need stories and information for the newsletter. We need your hard work and input to help make the group better this year for you and the rest of our KCA members. Hope to see you on a Monday.
Sincerely,
Jonathan Reasor, Editor in Chief of the Bolster and your newly elected KCA Secretary
P.S. Ben Gray has informed me that Mike Carter, a fellow KCA member, has our new KCA website up and running.
Go to www.kentuckycutlery.com and check it out. Thanks for the good work Mike!
The Irene Haberman Knife Raffle - and the Story behind it
Custom maker Paul Myers made a beautiful miniature fixed blade hunter and sheath and sent it to his good friend, Jerry Bodner. Both men are good members of the KCA. Paul no doubt expected Jerry to add it to his collection but told him he could do whatever he wanted with the knife. Use it as an addition to his collection, donate it, or use it as a fund-raiser for the KCA. This is when the Irene Haberman Memorial Raffle was born. Jerry decided to donate it as a fund raiser and at the same time do something nice in memory of Irene. He had visited with Irene and me a number of times over the years and we lways enjoyed the company.
Jerry purchased custom raffle tickets for the raffle which cost $75.00 and paid for them out of his own pocket. He carried them to meetings and shows in Louisville, Shepherdsville, Ft. Myers, Pigeon Forge and even to his bowling league and personally sold practically every single raffle ticket. Jerry could have been spending his time and effort making and selling his own miniature knives but devoted his efforts to Irene’s memory and the KCA. At the Christmas Party he turned over $725.00 to the Club.
Jerry and his wife, Frieda, have done countless kind acts for knife clubs all over the country. With the sales and ticket purchase Jerry deserves an $800.00 round of applause from all of us. Especially me. Jerry, you are a winner. Thank you.
Jim Haberman ( The winner of the Irene Haberman Knife Raffle was David Mullens an NKCA Director! )
Jimmie Allen’s Official Outing Knife by Barry Carithers
The Air
Adventures of Jimmie Allen was a
radio serial adventure program introduced to the young radio listening public in
1933. This successful radio
presentation was created by two former WWI military flying aces who found
themselves as newspaper &
free-lance writers in the early 1930s. Bob Bunt & Bill Moore joked about
creating a radio program centered around a 16 year old pilot and his flying
adventures as a mystery and crime fighter. At a Kansas City party where this
conversation first took place, a local radio station manager approached the two
& persuaded the men to write a script centered around their ideas. Dean Fitzer,
WDAF manager, promptly put the program into production.
Prospective sponsors for this program were approached and eventually Skelly Oil was impressed with the possible success of such a radio serial series & purchased the advertising rights. Soon the program was syndicated to numerous radio stations and Skelly found itself creating the Jimmie Allen Flying Club. Members received a set of wings, membership club card & photo. Premiums included picture puzzles, secret signaling whistles, airplane model planes, and a multitude of other items of interest. A lot of the material was marketed to the youngsters through their local Skelly Oil stations.
Among the “crème del la crème” of these radio show premiums was the Jimmie Allen official pocket knife & official outing knife. Both were manufactured by the Robeson Cutlery Co. The pocketknife was a 3 1/4 inch, jigged bone, regular jack with nickel-silver official “winged” shield. The much rarer standard Outers pattern sheath knife had a “Jimmie Allen Official Outing Knife” wing design etched on the blade and a large wing and “Official Outing Knife” embossed on the leather sheath. In 1937 Skelly dropped the sponsorship of Jimmie Allen due to its waning popularity and the introduction of the Captain Midnight radio serial. Introduced again during WW II with new sponsors, Jimmie now took on the villainous axis armies of Germans & Japanese. Post-war shows did not show the promise of previous productions & the show disappeared from the radio-waves in 1947.
Allen’s
Outing knife is one of the more sought-after pieces of the 1930’s radio promo
cutlery items. Tom Mix, Roy Rodgers, Hopalong Cassidy, and Lone Ranger knives
may fill in the gap for Western “hero” knife collectibles, but images of young
Jimmie, along with side-kicks Speed Robertson & Flash Lewis decked out in
Outers-pattern sheath knives, makes my knife-collecting heart, indeed, skip a
beat!
Good Hunting!
