The KCA held it's 2009 knife show at the Parquet Springs Conference Center in Shepherdsville, KY June 26-28, 2009. This was an outstanding show the way the smaller local knife shows used to be with a good mix of collectable knife dealers, custom knifemakers, and a few miscellaneous knife related tables. The amount and quality of the merchandise on display and for sale was impressive to say the least with dealers and knifemakers from several states in attendance.
There was table after table of knives of every style and description, rare vintage factory knives, new factory models, military items, and even knifemaking supplies and exotic woods. We had everything from everyday carry pocket knives to high end art pieces and just about everything in between. The knife auction on Saturday was a fun event and some people made off with some unbelievable bargains. The club raffled off several knives including some of Jerry Bodner's miniature knives and a D'Holder custom club knife with the proceeds going to the KCA and the Crusade for Children.
We had at least 10 custom knifemakers including Gil Hibben, Gene and Barbara Baskett, Doug and Diana Casteel, Mike Pellegrin, Jerry Bodner, Ed Wallace, Mike Carter, Cliff Fendley, David Dobbs, and Ron Richerson. Gil Hibben brought out a very interesting display of some his knives that were made for use in the movies and one of his most elaborate art knives, "The Alien".
Unfortunately the size of the crowd was disappointing. We are perplexed as to why such a show so close to Louisville, with easy access, free parking, optional admission fee, in a very nice air conditioned facility, with so many great knives had such low public attendance even though we heavily publicized the event.
The good news is that the KCA raised over $1100 through donations, raffles and the knife auction that will be donated to a very worthy cause, the Crusade for Children. The KCA wishes to thank everyone who came out to the show and helped support both the KCA and the Crusade for Children. For those of you who couldn't make it, here is what you missed .........
